Lots of change. I return to my yoga practice again and again, not just because it helps my body feel good, but also because it provides a framework to view my life journey.

My practice is to emulate building a yoga pose in my day to day actions. First I ground. Where am I? Physically, mentally, emotionally? What is my intention? Then I add the breath. I feel present in myself with the breath. With my exhale I release anything that doesn't serve me in this moment. With my inhale, I energize my intention. Visualize it. Manifest it. Only then comes the physical action itself. The action rides the waves of breath, expanding and contracting, rooting and rising.

What does this mean? Nothing and everything... I am poised for action. This is a reminder for myself that intention and the conscious forming of that intention, comes first.

My intention is to share with my home community of St John some of what I have learned about teaching yoga for the 4 trimesters of pregnancy. And no, that is not a typo. Pregnancy is the process of becoming a mother and that doesn't end in birth, it begins. Prenatal yoga, supports the body in preparation for birth, but it can also support the woman, the community and the journey for birth and beyond.
I believe that each one of us has an inner voice or teacher that can help guide us in our decisions, but we have to take the time to be quiet and listen. When we sing Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo, our opening song, we are saying, “I open my heart to the Guru (or teacher) within me and all around me”. We are setting an intention as a group. Even though the words have no meaning for most children, the very act of singing together, taking deep breaths with extended exhales and sounds that vibrate through the body, prepares them to be quiet and listen. It is the deep breath you take at the beginning of your adventure.

In yoga we practice finding that quiet place where we can hear our inner voices and connect to our truth. Pranayama, or working with the breath, is one way to find that inner stillness. In radiant child yoga we make it fun with games and music. We show children how they can energize or calm their bodies using the breath; empowering them. Music is another powerful tool. The songs we sing in class focus the attention of the mind, harness the power of the breath, and uplift the spirit. You can't forget to breathe while you're singing!

In Thich Naht Hanh's Plum Village, there is a mindfulness practice of ringing a bell. No matter what you are doing when the bell rings, you stop, listen to the sound and connect to your breath. Children love to ring the bell! There are many ways to use the bells in class. The simplest is to sit in a circle and have each child ring the bell while the rest of us listen to the sound of the bell, closing our eyes and taking three deep breaths. “Come back to that quiet space where your Guru can speak to you.”

I often use the bell during meditation or Savasana to mark the beginning or end of the quiet time. The Bell Freeze Dance game works especially well when everyone has a lot of energy!

Bell Freeze Dance- Each child dances to their own rhythm, freezing when they hear the bell for three deep breaths. When the sound fades the dance begins.

Walk with the Bell- Sit in a circle. One child stands up holding the bell, moving slowly and trying NOT to ring the bell. She walks across the circle and places the bell on the floor in front of a friend. Repeat until everyone has had a chance to walk with the bell.

I love teaching yoga, but teaching children's yoga is something special. It is joyful and uplifting and inspiring and challenging. Children are authentic. When they are present and engaged their excitement literally shines out of their eyes. When they are not interested or they are upset... well, there is no mistaking that either! When my daughter gets upset the first thing she does is start to hyperventilate. Her emotions take over and she loses control of her breath, and then her body. I hope to empower her, not only to control and calm her body, but to recognize her truth and communicate it in a positive way.

Working with our children, honoring their emotions and teaching them to honor and communicate their emotions is no easy feat. Honest, respectful and loving communication is a challenge at any age. The first step is often taking a step back; finding your quiet inner space where you can hear your truth.

Be a lamp to yourself. Be your own confidence.

Hold on to the truth within yourself as to the only truth.”

Today in Radiant Child Yoga we learned about what different animals do when Winter arrives. The class named animals that live in Colorado and worked together to decide whether that animal migrated, hibernated or adapted. Our migrating animals were duck, monarch butterfly, and elk. Rabbits, ptarmigan, and people adapt to Winter and snakes and bears hibernate.

With that decided, we circled up, sat tall and tuned in with "Ong Namo Guru dev Namo" and began our Winter Animal Yoga Adventure.

"Change is not something that we should fear. Rather is is something that we should welcome. For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom, and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they are meant to be."

~ BKS Iyengar

I came across this quote by renowned yoga teacher and founder of Iyengar Yoga, BKS Iyengar this weekend and it resonated. This is the season for reflection. As we turn inward and imagine our selves as we want to be, so we can turn outward and reflect that vision of ourselves into the future. It is the season of "Good Will Towards Men," when we examine our relationships with our loved ones, friends, enemies, and ourselves and find the compassion we need to let go of past hurts and move forward with fresh eyes and a loving heart. It is the season of the dark and cold, the longest night of the year, the Winter Solstice, when we light candles and hold celebrations, letting our inner light shine.

In my Radiant Child Yoga class we have been telling a story about the Winter Solstice. How as the world became darker and colder, the people and animals became afraid. A Warrior volunteered to journey to the Sun and find out how to bring the Sun back to warm the Earth. The Warrior finds the Sun, but his rays are diminished and his strength wanes. The Sun tells the Warrior that everyone on Earth must come together with intention, holding a space for the rebirth of the Sun. Remembering with gratitude all the reasons they need and want the Sun to return. They must come together to celebrate the return of the Sun. Sharing gifts and food, but most importantly sharing the lights of their candles and the brilliance of their inner light. In our class this week the story continues with the Warrior returning to her people and gathering all the people and animals together in celebration. We will be the animals and we will be the candles and we will laugh together and let our light shine.

We have also begun exploring Intention in my Morning Yoga class. Setting an intention is a very personal process. On Tuesday, I invited everyone to create a breath based mantra inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh to stay present with their intention during class. Thich Nhat Hanh is a Zen master who's key teaching is that, through mindfulness, we can learn to live happily in the present moment—the only way to truly develop peace, both in one’s self and in the world. We do this by connecting the intention to the breath.

I breathe in: "I am present in my body."
I breathe out: "I am peaceful."

Whatever your intention, it is important to simplify it into a powerful, affirmative statement for the breath mantra. "I want to be more forgiving," becomes "I am forgiving." "I want to control my anger," becomes "I am peaceful." This is a practice of mindfulness.

Thich Nhat Hanh defines mindfulness as "the energy of being aware and awake to the present moment. It is the continuous practice of touching life deeply in every moment of daily life. To be mindful is to be truly alive, present and at one with those around you and with what you are doing."

In yoga we use the breath as a tool to stay to connected to the present moment. A deep, conscious breath can take you out of an unconscious reaction and be the beginning of positive change. By linking the breath to an internal mantra, we link attention and intention and begin the process of harnessing our own inner power.

Setting Your New Years Intention

Over the next few weeks, as the old year wanes and the New Year approaches, I will continue to explore the ideas of intention and mindfulness in my classes. Incorporating these practices can offer powerful tools for changing unhelpful thought patterns. However, through intention and attention we can also begin changing unhelpful patterns in the body.

I invite you to join me in exploring your personal goals for your yoga practice. Some possible goals may include: improving posture, building strength, increasing flexibility or joint freedom, digestive health, reproductive health or managing stress. There are as many possibilities as there are individuals.

Each of us has learned to live with our own peculiarities. We get used to our aches and pains, accepting them as unavoidable parts of our lives. Our bodies adapt to repetitive movement patterns and old injuries unconsciously. Unconsciously, we mirror the postural habits of our parents and our societies. These unconscious postural habits and reactions to old injuries and daily stresses is what causes much of our daily discomforts. What we forget is that we have a mostly untapped capacity for transformation. We can change the underlying patterns that cause those aches and pains through attention and intention. The first step is developing an awareness of what those patterns are. Once we bring attention to our own physical habits, we can begin exploring the postural and alignment practices that can move the body towards balance. Yoga is moving the body and breath with intention. We can then take that awareness and practice of intention off the mat and into the daily routine.

If this resonates with you, take some time to think about what changes would bring you into a fuller, healthier, happier expression of who you are. Contact me to set up a half hour session, before or after class where we can explore your goals and postural habits. This will give me tools to provide more helpful, personalized instruction during our class times together and provide you with tools to turn your traditional New Years resolution into positive and intentional transformation.

I'm offering this service as a New Years special to my current students and to new students with the purchase of a punchcard. I am excited to continue growing and changing with you in this practice of life, as we all do the work of blossoming into the fullest expression of ourselves.
Last Thursday, Dec 5th, I held the first of many Radiant Child Yoga classes at Vida Yoga in Boulder! The class was joyful and fun, filled with stories, music, movement and self expression. It was a mixed age group. The core of the class was 3-7, with as young as 2, and as old as 11. My daughter Coral (pictured) is my teaching assistant, modeling the poses and helping to lead the songs.

We explored the topic of the Winter Solstice. Using storytelling to move the class through a series of yoga postures, into a relaxation and finally to explore self expression through art, creating our own class gratitude/prayer flag.

This Thursday, Dec 12th at 3 pm, we will continue the story we began last week. Don't worry if you weren't there last week, all classes can stand alone, even as we build on ideas and themes between classes. Our Winter Solstice story went something like this....
A Warrior (Warrior 1 pose and Tadasana) volunteered to journey to the Sun and find out how to bring the Sun back to warm the Earth. In his/her journey he/she walks a long way (Cross brain walk) singing songs to maintain his/her courageous spirit and trust in himself/herself. Along the way the Warrior meets a rabbit (Rabbit Pose), travels through a forest (Tree Pose), crosses an ocean (Swimming and Dolphin Pose), climbs to the top of the highest mountain to meet the Eagles (Eagle Pose) who fly (Warrior 3 Pose) him to the Sun. The Warrior finds the Sun, but his rays are diminished and his strength wanes. The Sun tells the Warrior that everyone on Earth must come together with intention.
I hope to see many new and returning yoga friends as we continue our exploration of yoga, laughter and the New Year. Don't be alarmed if you didn't recognize some of the names of the poses. We make them up all the time! In fact, I invite all our young yogis to pick their favorite animal and think about why their animal might want the sun to return to warm the Earth. If they feel inspired, they may share their thoughts in class on Thursday and they are welcome to invent a pose for their animal that we can practice together. If you would like to be on my email list to receive updates about my Radiant Child class please email me!

For under 4's a parent needs to be present and participating. If there ends up being enough interest, I would be happy to add an additional class for older students (7-10 ish). This possibility will be explored in January, but please let me know if you have any class requests or suggestions. This class is aimed mostly toward the homeschool community, but anyone is welcome. There is a suggested donation of $5. Click the link for more information on Radiant Child Yoga.
"What I do with children is unique, because in everything I do I address the body, mind, and spirit of the child.
